Learning Letter

Throughout the entirety of this course, the text presentations and the content portfolio project were the most beneficial for me. I have struggled with finding resources for teaching methods in the past because up until this class I have only taken one education course. I thought that presenting in front of other classmates that are going into the education field as well taught me a lot as well. Presenting in a classroom environment where we were all struggling with applications and NES tests, we are in a more open environment than in most classrooms. It takes the pressure off of the public speaking, which I thought helped us as students learn more of the material that was shown. I also really enjoyed the content portfolio project, because I felt that looking back on my past experiences through an educational lens showed me how to be more intentional with every assignment I complete.

I thought that the most important concept we learned about throughout this quarter was learning about how as teachers we need to reflect on what we are teaching and how we are teaching it on a daily basis. Especially when considering grammar, and how many students go throughout school not fully understanding all the aspects of grammar that they need to. I know that even as an English major I still do not have grammar perfected, but bringing awareness to it in this class helped me decide to study grammar even more and look for ways to remember it. Many times unfortunately teachers skip over grammar because they are not comfortable with it, but that is part of reflecting as a teacher. You have to acknowledge that there is more for you to learn, and you have to promote that idea to your students.

My participation in this course has influenced how I pursue everything that I am learning and how I go forward into my teaching career. I have realized that being a scholar and a life long learner is one of the most important things for me to practice as an educator, because I feel that we should always be learning, and especially as a teacher. Being a teacher is aiding learning, and I believe that teachers should always be open to learning as adults to be effective teachers. I have also come to the conclusion that part of always learning is always asking questions. I believe that you have to question everything you are learning and doing. This is part of the idea of reflecting on my teaching as I continue to learn and grow as an educator.
